Who needs to complete Form I-9?
All U.S. employers must ensure proper completion of Form I-9 for every individual they hire for employment in the United States, including citizens and noncitizens.
When should Form I-9 be completed?
Section 1 must be completed by the employee on or before the first day of employment. Section 2 must be completed by the employer within 3 business days of the employee's first day of work.
What documents do I need to bring?
You must present documentation that establishes your identity and employment authorization. You can present one document from List A (proves both identity and work authorization) OR one document from List B (proves identity) AND one from List C (proves work authorization).
What if I don't have a Social Security Number?
If you have applied for but not yet received your SSN, you may write 'Applied For' in the SSN field. If you are not eligible for an SSN, write 'N/A'.
Do I need to update my I-9 if I change jobs?
Yes, you must complete a new Form I-9 each time you are hired by a new employer.
